An Introduction To Eyelash Extensions For Beginners

If you’ve ever dreamt of waking up with long, luscious lashes that didn’t require a heavy application of mascara, it may be time to consider getting eyelash extensions. With regards to eyelash extensions, we aren’t talking about regular falsies. Rather, this type of lash application can last for weeks, making it an extremely attractive option for those who are striving for a more low maintenance beauty routine. While this trend has become popular in recent years, you still may be wondering about the overall process. Before you schedule your appointment, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the fine details so you can be sure you’re getting the most out of your new lashes.

What You Need To Know About Eyelash Extensions

There are a few things to keep in mind prior to getting eyelash extensions, and for a beginner, it may not always be clear what to look out for. If you’ve been thinking about enhancing your lashes, here is everything you need to know before you make the leap:

  • Prep for Your Appointment: Make sure to arrive at your salon with a completely bare face. This includes avoiding waterproof mascara and eye makeup for a week prior to your appointment as these products can leave behind an invisible film that may prevent the extensions from fully adhering. Also, avoid curling your natural lashes as this creates a crease at the base of your lashes which will make it challenging for your lash artist to apply the extensions accurately. Be sure to clear your schedule for the appointment as an initial application can take anywhere up to two hours to complete.
  • Eyelash Material Options: During an eyelash consultation, your lash artist will help you determine what material to choose as well as how many of these lashes should be applied. The most common types of lash material are silk and faux mink. Silk lashes tend to give off more shine and pop, whereas faux mink lashes are best if you are opting for a more ethereal look. Regardless of what material you choose, an experienced lash artist should always vary the lengths of individual lashes to create a more natural vibe.
  • Application Process: The application process for eyelash extensions is far more meticulous than gluing a strip of falsies to your lash line. Lash artists will glue individual extensions on top of your existing lashes until you are both satisfied with the results. Since lash extensions do not come in strips, they are easier to customize to suit your eye shape, desired length and lifestyle giving you the most natural looking appearance.
  • Care Routine: Following your appointment, do not get your lashes wet for at least 24 hours as the adhesive needs to completely dry. Also, you may need to tweak your normal beauty routine if you use oily products, as the oils may interfere with the adhesive. When it’s time to wash your face, try not to splash water directly around your eyes. Instead, use a cotton swab dipped in a mixture of distilled water and baby shampoo to wipe away any impurities. We also recommend gently brushing your lashes everyday with a soft, clean spoolie. While your lash extensions may take some time getting used to, they are completely worth it and will serve you well with the right care.
  • Find a Reputable Salon: While there is not enough evidence to suggest that eyelash extensions damage your natural lashes, there is a small chance you may develop traction alopecia. This condition, caused by the constant weight of repeated applications, can result in your natural lashes falling out. However, it usually takes years of bad lash applications and improper care to result in this condition. That’s why it’s important to do your research and find a reputable salon to perform your eyelash extension. Before sitting down in the chair, make sure your technician follows proper hand washing procedures, uses sterilized equipment and wears a mask.

New Year, New Look – Beauty Trends For 2020 -your 2020 Beauty Guide From The Top Beauty School In Canada

Hello, 2020! It’s time for a makeup reboot. This year, understated makeup application will be the biggest beauty trend. You can expect to see the beauty community embrace a more natural makeup approach with an emphasis on using and promoting sustainable products. Over the last decade, the beauty industry has made significant progress in terms of the way beauty is reflected in mainstream media. Today, advertisements are getting better at accurately reflecting the everyday woman, in addition to a range of beauty products that are now more inclusive than ever before.

The Biggest Beauty Trends of 2020

It’s time to kick this decade off in the right direction. Staying on top of the latest in the beauty industry is an exciting place to start. Continue reading below, as we highlight some of the biggest beauty trends you can expect to see this year:

  • Sheer Foundation: In 2020, it’s time that skin actually looks like skin! If wearing foundation is part of your makeup routine, switch out your regular formula for a water-tint foundation. While it may not provide the full coverage you’re used to, a more hydrating foundation can smooth over blemishes and even add a natural glow.
  • Feathered Brows: Creating a feathered brow can be a simple yet impactful tweak to your makeup routine this year. Using a brow pencil, fill in any sparse areas of your eyebrow and then brush the hairs up using a clear or tinted gel to hold them in place.
  • Iridescent Eye Shadow: While we don’t suggest going for a disco ball look, iridescent eye shadow has become an emerging trend that is taking over in 2020. If you’re shopping for new eye shadows, the breakout shade is not an earth tone, but rather, a soft lilac. Purple hues will have their moment in the spotlight this year so it’s the perfect time to try out this trend.
  • Balmy Lips: Gone are the days of matte, overdrawn lips. Now, the goal is to keep the shade you apply on your lips as close to your actual lip colour as possible. It’s all about the sheer nudes and brown tones with a glossy finish to complete your ethereal look.
  • Sustainable Beauty: If these makeup trends are any indication, 2020 will be taking a “less is more” approach when it comes to beauty. Additionally, with the rise in climate change awareness, more and more brands are sourcing sustainable ingredients for their products and doing their part to reduce waste by using eco-friendly or recyclable packaging.

If you have been considering a career in the beauty industry, now is the perfect time to get involved. Whether you are just starting out or looking to enhance your existing skills, Beauty Institute Canada has a program that’s right for you. Are you passionate about experimenting with makeup and helping clients look and feel their best? Why not enroll in our Makeup Artist Diploma program. Eyebrows Make A Statement – Learn How To Get The Perfect Shape -take Our Threading Workshop At Beauty Institute Canada

In recent years, the eyebrow obsession has completely dominated the beauty world. If you are familiar with the frustration of misshaped, sparse or uneven eyebrows, then you may already know why they are so important to your overall appearance. Not only do they help frame the eyes and shape your face but they are also important tools in how we communicate. While not everyone can be born with perfect brows, regular maintenance can go a long way to helping you achieve a look that suits you best.

4 Simple Steps for the Perfect Eyebrow Shape

Eyebrows have become an integral part in helping us express emotion and enhancing our natural beauty. As a result, it is absolutely necessary to have them trimmed, shaped and filled in to ensure that they make the right statement.  Here are a few simple tips you can follow to get the perfect eyebrow shape for your face:

  • Prepare Your Tools: You need to have the right tools before you begin shaping your brows. If you shape your eyebrows at home, invest in a good pair of tweezers as plucking is your best DIY option. Treatments like threading or waxing should be left to the professionals.
  • Outline the Desired Shape: Determining the best eyebrow shape depends on the shape of your face. For instance, round faces should create as high of an arch as you can and avoid rounded brow shapes. Conversely, square faces may be more suited to a curved brow shape and avoid overly thin and short shapes. If you have a heart-shaped face, a low arch with a rounded curve looks the most natural and if your face is oval shaped, a flat and softly-angled eyebrow shape will work best. Once you have determined your face shape, take an eyebrow pencil and map out the desired shape. Anything outside the line can and should be plucked.
  • Take Your Time Plucking: The best time to shape your brows is after a warm shower which will help reduce pain and allow the hairs to come out more easily. Make sure you are sitting in a brightly lit room or in natural daylight if possible. Use a large or magnified mirror to help you as you take your time forming the shape.
  • Maintenance: Brow maintenance is an important step once you are happy with the final result. Tweezing one or two hairs on a daily basis is much more efficient than trying to maintain your perfect eyebrow shape towards the end of the week when several stray hairs have already grown back.

At Beauty Institute Canada, we offer a number of Specialty Workshops including a session on threading. Here, you will learn all about the history of this ancient art, as well as the skills associated with this extremely effective hair removal therapy. Our Workshops are designed to help students add onto existing skill sets within a short time frame for your convenience. Depending on the Workshop you choose, they can range in length from 2-4 hours, ensuring that you have enough time to refresh your knowledge or learn something new.

Call us at 905-674-0100 or write to us for more information about any of our beauty, skincare and makeup workshops, certificate courses or diplomas. You can also apply online to enrol in any of our Diploma Programs at our Canadian beauty school located in Toronto.

The ABCs Of Microblading: An Overview By Your Trusted Toronto Beauty School

They say you are never fully dressed without your eyebrows. Yet, millions of women all over the world struggle to get that perfect pair of full, shapely eyebrows for a variety of reasons. Whether your brows are naturally sparse, have endured years of over-plucking, or they have taken a beating due to chemotherapy or alopecia, the good news is that you can now get perfectly healthy brows, quite easily, through microblading.

Also known as ‘eyebrow embroidery’, ‘microstroking’ or ‘feather touch’, this relatively new treatment is a semi-permanent method of reconstructing and reshaping your brows. While the procedure itself is simple, it requires fairly intricate skills that only a trained technician can perform successfully. Given its growing demand, more and more make-up artists and estheticians are getting themselves familiarized in this brow sculpting form. At Beauty Institute Canada, we offer a specialized certificate course in microblading, where you will not only learn the fundamental theory and techniques of brow embroidery, but also gain invaluable industry knowledge from our experienced instructors. Read up more about microblading to know why this treatment is gaining unprecedented popularity, including amongst celebrities.

Get Your Dream Eyebrows through Microblading

A form of brow tattooing, microblading involves filling up of the empty spaces between your brow hair with fine strokes of special pigmented ink that lend a natural, hair-like appearance.

The Procedure

Here is what you should expect:

  • Using a sharp, scalpel-like tool, filled with cosmetic tattoo pigment matched to your hair colour, the technician will skilfully draw strokes that camouflage your missing eyebrow hair. Essentially, the tool is used to deposit the pigment in the outermost layer of your skin, so that it mimics the look of your existing brow hair.
  • This intricate eyebrow embroidery takes approximately two to three hours and may set you back by $500 – $800, depending on the type of salon and the artists’ skill level.
  • The procedure is not painful, you may only feel a slight pinching sensation. Your technician will also apply an anesthetic cream to minimize your discomfort.
  • While the effects of the treatment typically last for two to three years, your technician may recommend a follow-up session every six to twelve months for colour touch-up.

In fact, if done correctly and by an experienced technician, no one will ever guess that your brows have been sculpted through an artificial treatment.

The Immediate Aftercare

Immediately after a microstroking treatment, you may find that your brows look darker or swollen, or have reddish patches around them. This is a temporary inflammation that will disappear once the area heals. Some of the precautions that you should take, especially in the first ten days post-treatment are:

  • Avoid washing the area. Any moisture will irritate the bladed area and cause the tattooed ink to become dull or faded, even before it bonds to your skin.
  • Avoid intense physical activity that involves sweating. Keep your workouts light.
  • Do not apply any make-up to the treated area. In case of itchiness, use the ointments or creams prescribed by your technician.
  • Avoid the temptation of constantly touching your brows with your fingers, until they heal.

With proper care, during and immediately post the treatment, you will be able to wake up to your dream eyebrows, everyday, for several months at a time. Once the brows have healed, there is no maintenance needed.

5 Travel Beauty Tips from a Professional Makeup Artist

Have you ever wondered how your favourite celebrities manage to step off the plane looking flawless? Chances are they travel with a hair and makeup team. If you don’t have the luxury of traveling with your own personal makeup artists, we have you covered. Here are a few simple makeup tricks you can do yourself that will keep you looking your best even at 30,000 ft in the air:

  1. Hydrate Your Skin: Traveling on an airplane can take a toll on your skin. To prevent dryness, drink plenty of water and apply a thick moisturizer or hydrating overnight mask for those long-haul flights. This will help you maintain a good base when it’s time to reapply your makeup towards the end of your journey. Lack of sleep and recycled air may also dry out your eyes and lips. To counteract this problem, bring eye drops to lubricate your eyes and keep redness at bay. Finally, apply a medicated lip balm to soothe chapped lips.
  2. Skip Foundation: Whether you are traveling or not, dry and flakey foundation is never a good look. If you want to even out your skin tone, use a tinted moisturizer instead of your usual foundation. For those who can’t go a day without wearing full-coverage makeup, use a silicone-based primer before applying your foundation. This will help protect your skin and prevent it from drying out.
  3. Pack an Eyelash Curler: Typically, cars, trains and planes are not the first places that come to mind when thinking about where to get a restful sleep. Unfortunately, long distance traveling may result in losing those precious hours of shut eye and affect your overall appearance. To fake the look of well rested eyes, use your favourite mascara and don’t forget to pack an eyelash curler. Curling your lashes will instantly make your eyes look bigger and brighter.
  4. Add a Pop of Colour: Losing any amount of sleep can make your skin appear pale and dull. Luckily, you can use a convertible cream blush to add some colour back into your complexion. These products are excellent travel companions as they can be used for both your lips and cheeks and are easy to use for a natural, beautiful finish.
  5. Perk up Your Complexion: If there was ever a moment you thought about incorporating shimmer into your makeup routine, now is the time to do so. Fake the look of dewy skin by dusting a soft shimmer cream or powder on your face. For an instant lift, dab the product on the high points of your cheeks, down the bridge of your nose, and your cupid’s bow.

If you want to explore your talent as a professional makeup artist in the GTA, we have the perfect course for you. Unlock your potential and enroll in our makeup artist diploma or certificate program today. You will be on your way to a rewarding and successful career in the beauty industry.

10 Treatments to Learn as a Medical Aesthetician in Toronto

Becoming a Medical Aesthetician is an incredibly rewarding career. Take a look at the following services that you will be able to provide after obtaining your Medical Aesthetics diploma in Toronto:

  • Skin Analysis and Care: Skin is the largest organ of the human body. A thorough skin analysis helps clients establish their skin condition and what it means to both their internal and external health. This valuable insight gives a clear indication of what treatment plans are the most appropriate for each client.
  • Facials: As one of the more popular treatments, facials are an excellent way for medical aestheticians to gain a better understanding of each unique skin type before suggesting further treatment. A facial typically consists of makeup removal, skin cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, massage, a treatment mask, and moisturizer or sunscreen application.
  • Manicures and Pedicures: A manicure is a beauty treatment for the hands and fingernails while a pedicure is performed for the feet and toenails. A typical manicure and pedicure involve filing and shaping the nails, a massage, and optional nail polish application.
  • Waxing: Fast, effective and long lasting hair removal can be achieved through waxing. This treatment removes hair at the root and applied with either hard or soft wax. Soft wax is generally used for larger areas of the body such as the legs, back, and chest, while hard wax removal is more gentle for sensitive areas such the bikini, underarms, and facial area.
  • Laser Hair Removal: As an alternative to shaving, waxing, or tweezing, laser hair removal is becoming a popular choice for unwanted hair removal. This medical procedure uses a laser to destroy the hair follicle which slows down and eventually stops hair growth.
  • Makeup Artistry: A professional makeup artist uses various mediums that are applied to the surface of the skin to enhance the existing features of an individual’s face. Makeup artistry also includes makeup application and prosthetics for film, theatre, magazine, and fashion modelling productions.
  • Body Massage and Treatments: A body massage is performed to cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate all areas of the skin. Once the body has been scrubbed, a mask or wrap is applied as a detoxifying treatment. Body wraps can also be used to treat various skin conditions, such as cellulite, and sometimes have a diuretic effect that may help with temporary weight loss.
  • Chemical Peels: To improve the skin’s appearance, a chemical peel can be used as an effective form of treatment. Mild chemicals are applied to the skin that creates blisters which eventually peel off to reveal smoother and suppler skin.
  • Microdermabrasion: Tiny exfoliating crystals are sprayed onto the treatment area to gently remove the outer layer of skin to reveal new, smoother skin. Unlike dermabrasion, this procedure can be performed on all skin tones and colours as it results in subtle yet effective changes.
  • Photofacials (Pigment and Vascular): A photofacial is an intense facial treatment that uses pulses of light to penetrate deep into the skin. The procedure is meant to boost collagen production, eliminate brown spots, and diminish the appearance of broken capillaries.

Latest Trends In Permanent Makeup

Celebrities Love Microblading – Is It for You?

Microblading, cosmetic tattooing, microstroking, eyebrow embroidery, feather touch—these are all different names for the hottest trend in permanent makeup. The fact that several celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Bella Thorne have taken to it has only fanned the flames.

In the interest of those who are unfamiliar with it, microblading involves the use of a sophisticated hand tool to draw semi-permanent strokes on the brow to camouflage lost or missing brow hair. Unlike some other makeup trends that are expensive, perhaps painful, and may or may not deliver the results you really want, this one has seen much success for many who have tried it. The good news is that it isn’t only for the silver screen and glamour magazines. You can try it too!

Why Should You Consider Microblading?

Here are the top 3 reasons why this method of cosmetic tattooing is worth exploring:

  • Microblading is an easy and painless procedure—unlike conventional tattooing that can be quite painful and involve longer healing times. Perhaps that is why it has gained so much traction within a short time.
  • It is the perfect procedure to replace lost eyebrows for people undergoing cancer treatment (chemotherapy) or those suffering from alopecia.
  • If you do not like the shape of your brows (and many people don’t), microblading can give you that perfect brow you have always envisioned. In this case, microblading will be used to augment the natural shape of your brows or to fill out gaps introduced by over-tweezing or threading too frequently.
  • When swimming or on vacation there is no worry about drawn on brows washing off unexpectedly.

Rather than spend time and money at a salon to maintain your brows each month, a better option is to try microblading. You will enjoy the same results for less and the effect can last for up to 2 years!

What is Microblading?

Microblading, also known as eyebrow embroidery, microstroking, feather touch and hair stokes is a relatively new method of permanent makeup that provides a means to partially or fully camouflage missing eyebrow hair with the appearance of simulated hair using fine deposits of cosmetic tattoo pigments.

Microblading is performed by manually depositing pigment superficially in the upper region of the dermis with the use of a hand tool with attached needles fused together to create a blade, it does not involve the use of a machine. The Microblading technique involves drawing individual, crisp hair strokes that can be very natural looking but nonetheless Microblading is still a form of cosmetic tattooing. The Microblading needle groupings contain needles that are extremely fine in diameter in comparison to the needles used in traditional methods.

Who is it for?

Microblading is for any person wanting to perfect and create perfect brows.

Microblading is a great alternative for pre and/or post chemo clients and alopecia clients, who will or have lost their eyebrows. Microblading’s ability to closely resemble real hair provides a very natural looking replacement to sparse or non-existent brows.
