How To Reduce The Appearance Of Acne -effective Tips For Managing Your Breakouts—from Beauty Institute Canada

Blemishes happen to the best of us. They are usually the result of clogged hair follicles, hormonal imbalances, or a bacterial infection that results in inflammation. While pimples, also called acne, don’t pose a serious health threat, they can flare up at the most inconvenient times and lead to emotional reactions like lower self-esteem. Being unable to live life confidently because of your acne can affect your social life and even interfere with your productivity at work. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to prevent breakouts before they happen and keep your acne in control once and for all.

Simple Ways to Reduce Your Acne

When you look in the mirror and notice a big, angry pimple on your face, your first urge might be to pick at it. You may end up obsessing over it in a bid to get rid of it. However, this will likely lead to scarring and there are far better solutions to reduce your likelihood of breakouts in the first place.

Here are a few simple yet effective tips for combating your stubborn acne:

  • Keep Your Face Clean: Wash your face at least twice a day to remove excess dirt, sweat and oil build-up. Using an alcohol-free cleanser, wash your face with warm water and use circular motions with your hands when applying the cleanser. Rinse thoroughly with cool water and use a clean washcloth to pat dry. During the day, avoid touching your face as much as possible since your hands are constantly coming into contact with bacteria, which can trigger a breakout.
  • Choose Gentle Products: Select the right facial products based on whether you have oily skin, combination skin or dry skin. This will make a huge difference in the appearance of your skin since certain products are better suited for different skin types. Avoid applying astringents, toners or exfoliates if you are prone to breakouts as dry skin may cause your skin to appear worse.
  • Apply a Moisturizer: Several acne products contain ingredients that dry out the skin and cause peeling. Counteract this side effect by applying a non-comedogenic moisturizer which is gentle on sensitive skin and won’t trigger acne. While keeping your skin hydrated with a moisturizer is important, avoid choosing one that contains synthetic fragrances or other ingredients that could irritate your skin.
  • Monitor Your Diet: Eating a high-glycemic diet may lead to acne. These foods include things like chips, baked goods and soft drinks. Also, if your diet contains a lot of dairy-rich food, you may want to cut back or find a dairy alternative that works for you. It is also important to drink plenty of water to reduce redness and inflammation of the skin.
  • Reduce Stress: While easier said than done, reducing your stress levels can have a huge impact on your body not only internally but externally as well. While stress does not necessarily cause pimples, it may aggravate existing blemishes by producing more oil-stimulating hormones. Managing your stress could be as simple as taking a few minutes out of your day to journal or enjoy something you like to do, for example, attending a regular yoga class, meditating or getting a massage.
  • Consult a Dermatologist: If you are taking care of yourself but are still experiencing acne flare ups, it may be time to contact your dermatologist. A dermatologist can help you treat your acne, prevent new breakouts and reduce the appearance of scars.
